Africa’s infrastructure ambition is easy to articulate, but far harder to finance and deliver.
Across the continent, power, water and transport projects must compete for capital while responding to different regulatory environments, institutional capabilities, market structures and operating conditions.
The strength of an infrastructure plan therefore depends on more than the scale of the ambition. It depends on whether projects can be structured, financed and implemented within the realities of each market.
This challenge is addressed in the Finance and Investment content within ESI Africa Magazine 2026, which examines the mechanics required to move infrastructure priorities towards implementation.
The magazine, created by VUKA Group through ESI Africa, brings together reporting, analysis and industry perspectives across seven chapters covering power, energy, water and transportation. Every African country is represented at least once, creating a continent-wide view of the policies, investments, technologies and operating conditions influencing infrastructure development.

Finance does not operate separately from market realities
Bankability depends on more than the availability of capital. Regulation, revenue models, procurement, institutional capacity and the conditions in which assets must operate affect whether a project can progress.
The magazine’s Across the Map chapter provides this wider context by examining reforms, constraints and operating environments across African markets. Investment Mechanics then considers how infrastructure projects are financed and moved towards implementation.
Together, these chapters show why investment decisions must be linked to the realities of individual countries rather than approached through a single continental model.
The financing discussion also extends into the magazine’s coverage of energy and water. Engines of Energy considers how different generation resources can be balanced within electricity systems, while The Water Agenda examines access, financing, resilience and the economics of reuse.
These are closely connected infrastructure questions. Energy projects need viable commercial structures and dependable networks, while water projects must balance investment requirements with affordability, service delivery and long-term resource pressure.
Turning planning into practical decisions
Two ESI Africa on-demand webinars explore tools that can support infrastructure planning and reform.
Long-term Financial Modelling to Inform Municipal Utility Reform examines how financial modelling can help stakeholders understand reform choices and their long-term implications.

Technology must work within operating systems
The magazine’s Innovation in Action chapter examines technologies and strategies being deployed across sectors. Its focus is practical: technology creates lasting value when it can be integrated into existing systems, financed appropriately and supported throughout its operating life.
The Elites chapter considers what previous African Infrastructure Elites are doing now and who could be recognised next. It connects industry recognition with implementation, leadership and measurable infrastructure progress.
The magazine also includes the Enlit Africa Show Guide 2026, bringing together expert interviews and information on topics addressed at the event. The next Enlit Africa will take place from 11 to 13 May 2027 at the CTICC in Cape Town, South Africa.
Water Security Africa will be co-located at the same venue and on the same dates, bringing water planning, delivery and investment into the wider energy and infrastructure conversation.

Connecting viable projects with investment
For infrastructure owners seeking capital and delivery partners, the Project&Investment Network, in collaboration with the African Infrastructure Elites: Projects and People, provides a route into discussions with investors, financiers, developers, offtakers and solution providers.
The network focuses on project development, bankability and helping viable African energy and water projects move closer to investment and implementation.
