The Delegation of the European Union and the Diplomatic Missions of the EU Member States to Libya welcome the announcement of an agreement signed today by the Libyan representatives participating in the UN-facilitated “Small Convening” on the reconstitution of the Board of the High National Elections Commission and on the electoral framework.
We recognise this agreement as a meaningful milestone towards unifying the institutions and creating the conditions for credible national elections. We commend the Libyan participants for their constructive approach, political responsibility and readiness to find common ground in the national interest.
We call on the House of Representatives and the High Council of State to engage positively with the outcome reached by the “Small Convening” and to take the necessary steps for its implementation without delay. All Libyan institutions and stakeholders should seize this opportunity to build on the progress achieved and embrace compromise to advance the country towards renewed institutional legitimacy and unity.
We remain fully supportive of the efforts of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and Special Representative of the Secretary-General Hanna Tetteh to facilitate a genuinely Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process. We will continue to stand by Libya and its people in support of the country’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
