After spending decades travelling the world in service of Seychelles, Ambassador Claude Morel shared his dream of exploring more of the islands of his homeland at a slower pace with President Dr Patrick Herminie, who received him at State House for a farewell call ahead of his retirement.
President Herminie paid tribute to Ambassador Morel’s distinguished diplomatic career, thanking him for his decades of dedicated service and unwavering commitment to advancing Seychelles’ interests on the international stage. He described Ambassador Morel as a consummate diplomat whose professionalism, integrity and wealth of experience have left a lasting mark on the country’s foreign service.
The President wished Ambassador Morel good health, fulfilment and every success in retirement, expressing hope that this new chapter would bring him peace of mind, new experiences and the opportunity to realise his dream of exploring more of the islands of Seychelles.
Ambassador Morel was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora Mr Barry Faure.
Ambassador Morel expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve his country over the past four decades, noting that the achievements of his career were never his alone but were made possible through the confidence placed in him by successive governments, the dedication of colleagues and the unwavering support of the Seychellois people.
With more time to reflect in retirement, Ambassador Morel said he hopes to put pen to paper, capturing the anecdotes and lessons accumulated over a lifetime in diplomacy.
He intends to write about pivotal moments in world history, including the Cold War, and the lasting impact they have had on international relations, leaving behind a record that future generations can learn from.
He also expressed his wish to maintain a close dialogue with those who follow in his footsteps, believing that the sharing of experience and institutional knowledge remains invaluable to strengthening Seychelles’ diplomatic service.
Looking ahead to retirement, Ambassador Morel said he is eager to embrace a slower pace of life and finally fulfil a long-held ambition of visiting more of Seychelles’ islands. Having travelled extensively across the world, he remarked that nowhere compares to Seychelles and that he looks forward to enjoying the country he has proudly represented for so many years.
Throughout his distinguished career, Ambassador Morel represented Seychelles in New York, Brussels, Paris and Pretoria, while also serving as Foreign Secretary and holding several senior diplomatic appointments, earning recognition as the country’s longest serving ambassador.
